The first part of this episode provides an overview of how you can apply for assistance while you are unemployed. The second part provides tips and tricks to help you stand out in your job search.

Unemployment

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) outlines the administrative process and available benefits for unemployed Texans. The agency will evaluate your unemployment benefits claim based on:

  • Past wages

  • Job separation(s)

  • Ongoing eligibility requirements

You must meet all requirements in each of these three areas to qualify for unemployment benefits.

To apply, you must go to TWC's website Unemployment Benefits Services (UBS) portal to apply for benefits, request payments, view claim and payment status, and more.

You can apply for benefits if you are unemployed or working reduced hours through no fault of your own. To file a claim, navigate to Apply for Benefits. For more information, see the Learn More section for When to Apply for Benefits, Information You Need to Apply, and How to Apply.

To be eligible for benefits based on your job separation, you must be either unemployed or working reduced hours through no fault of your own. Examples include layoff, reduction in hours or wages not related to misconduct, being fired for reasons other than misconduct, or quitting with good cause related to work.

The Job Search

Searching for a job can quickly become extremely overwhelming. Between all of the job search databases, WorkForTexas.gov, and more, you can quickly feel like you're in over your head.

To stand out from the beginning and keep your sanity during the job search process, it is important to know your resume, your marketing points, and why you bring value as a candidate and employee.

To make your resume stand out, think about the unique experiences and skills only you possess. For me, that's being an author, my experience in the Miss America Opportunity, and my ability to connect with others during the interview. Know your unique value and highlight in every phase of the job search.

To stand out during your interview, highlight these unique skills! Show your personality and how you will be a candidate unlike anyone else. Prepare for your interview by knowing the company's brand points, accomplishments, and the unique experiences of your interviewer. The more you can connect yourself to the company and appeal to the interviewer's human side, the better!
